Overview

Ocular neovascular-related diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, are common causes of acquired vision loss in the Japanese population. We are interested in identifying the underlying mechanism of and developing novel therapies for these diseases. We are also taking part in a large epidemiological study (the Heijo-kyo Study) to investigate the visual function and prevalence of eye diseases in the elderly. Our research interests also include glaucoma, which is the most common cause of vision loss in Japan, in addition to the effects of intraocular lenses on circadian rhythm in cataract surgery. Overall, we seek to understand the role of ophthalmology in the QoL of the elderly in order to develop measures to improve it.
